“Apart from improving the infrastructure at key markets that serve as filters for animals entering the formal system, the project will help to build knowledge and capacity among community group to facilitate their engagement in livestock production and marketing,” Mr Camarada said.
Statistics by FAO showed that the Kenyan livestock sector is dominated by small producers who are mainly concentrated around the arid and semi-arid areas that take up close to 75 per cent of the national land mass.
In such arid areas, livestock account for about 90 per cent employment and up to 95 per cent of the total family income.
But surprisingly, despite the huge potential, these regions continue to experience one of the highest levels of poverty in the country.
